The Bernese Mountain dog was originated in Switzerland. They were working dogs particularly good at draft work and pulling carts. The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the oldest, most beautiful Breeds of working dog. They are large, strong, muscular, active dogs. Years of isolated conditions and inbreeding have conspired to keep their blood line pure but have also given it its share of problems, decreasing the dog’s average lifetime.
The Bernese male stands 25-28 inches at the withers and tips the scale at 81-120 pounds. Females range from 23-26 inches and 64-98 pounds.

The major advantage of the Bernese Mountain Dog’s friendly behaviour is the ability by which the dogs integrate themselves into virtually any type of family environment. Kids or other pet animals are not a problem for the Bernese Mountain Dog. They are very intellectual, easy to train, very confident, alert and good-natured. Slow to mature. They are friendly with strangers, and are generally good with other animals. The Bernese needs to be with people and not just confined to the backyard or a kennel.
Bernese Mountain Dog are not recommended for flat life. They are truly inactive indoors and will do best with at least a big, fenced-in park. These Dogs shed year-round, and shed densely. Because of this, you’ll need to brush and shampoo the dogs whenever they’re shedding.
A premium diet that agrees with the dog’s gastric system and keeps his coat shiny is sufficient for growth and feedings should be given twice a day to decrease the chances of bloat. To prevent undue weight on developing joints, puppies should not be allowed to gain weight. They gain weight very easily and rapidly so don’t over feed them.
This breed is prone to bloat, cancer, eyelid defects and hip dysplasia. The average life-time of the Bernese breed has decreased gradually in recent years from 10-12 years to 7-9 years.
